Natalia "Natasha" Romanova was born around 1928, left as an orphan after her home caught fire during a surprise attack on Stalingrad by enemy forces when she was still just a child. Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier, saved Natasha from the flames and took care of her as she grew up. By the late 1930s, Natasha had caught the attention of Soviet intelligence, which began training her in secret. In 1941, the Hand, a powerful ninja clan, almost brainwashed Natasha into working for them, but Ivan and two other heroes, Logan (later known as Wolverine) and Captain America, saved her in time. Following World War II, Natasha was chosen to join the Black Widow Program, an elite team of female spies who could be activated at any moment. Among her instructors were Bucky Barnes, Captain America's former sidekick, now a skilled assassin known as the Winter Soldier; Natasha learned ballet to hide her true mission. Eventually, the Soviet government arranged for Natasha to marry Alexi Shostakov, a famous test pilot. After several happy years together, the KGB staged Shostakov's death in a rocket crash; Natasha was devastated and threw herself into her training at the Red Room Academy, earning her title as the Black Widow.
