Black Panther is a superhero figure originating from American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee, who serves as both writer and editor, in collaboration with Jack Kirby, the artist, making his debut appearance in Fantastic Four #52 (dated July 1966) during the Silver Age of Comic Books. Black Panther's true name is T'Challa, the king and guardian of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Possessing abilities enhanced by drinking ancient Wakandan herbs in the form of a heart-shaped one, T'Challa relies heavily on his expertise in science, rigorous physical training, hand-to-hand combat skills, and access to wealth and cutting-edge technology to fight against his adversaries. Black Panther marks the first mainstream African-American superhero appearing in American comics, having preceded other African-American superheroes such as Marvel's Falcon (1969), Luke Cage (1972), and Blade (1973) of DC Comics' Green Lantern. In one storyline, Black Panther is temporarily handled by Kasper Cole, a multiracial New York City police officer. Initially posing as the hero, Cole later adopts the White Tiger moniker, becoming an ally to T'Challa. The leadership role of Black Panther and Wakanda's king position has also been passed on to T'Challa's sister Shuri for a period when he recovers from severe injuries. Black Panther has made significant appearances in numerous television series, animated films, and video games. He is portrayed by Chadwick Boseman in the live-action 2016 film Captain America: Civil War and the 2018 film Black Panther, set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
