Black Hills (April 2009)
sketchfab
Large granite boulder measuring approximately 3m x 2m stands prominently in a secluded woodland setting near Cottingley in Bradford. This is the largest and most intricate of four intricately carved rocks found within the Black Hills Scout Camp. First documented in 1976, it was one of five scheduled monuments designated by English Heritage in 1999: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1018817 However, it's highly likely that only four of these unique carvings exist. The design is quite distinctive, featuring cups, grooves, and rings within larger enclosed circles. Additional cups, rings, and linear grooves are discovered outside the main carving. There is evidence suggesting superimposition in certain areas, particularly where linear grooves are present. Unfortunately, this carving was not included in Boughey & Vickerman's 2003 publication 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding', but it was later added as reference IAG4a. Due to its location outside the area covered by CSI, the carving does not have a record with ERA. A detailed model was created from 79 photographs taken during research for an English Heritage publication on SfM technologies in April 2009.
