Fraxinus nigra, the black ash, is an indigenous species of eastern Canada and northeastern United States, covering western Newfoundland to southeastern Manitoba, and south to Illinois and northern Virginia. The young tree has smooth bark, but as it matures, the bark turns dark gray or brown and becomes corky. It grows up to 70 feet (21 meters) tall, yet remains slender. The branches point upward, forming a slightly rounded crown. The leaves on this ash tree are compound, each consisting of seven to eleven toothed leaflets that are not stalked, dying and falling to the ground in autumn.
