First appeared in Fawcett Comics' The Marvel Family #1 in 1945 as the supervillain of the Marvel Family, and was later "relaunched" in the 1970s as part of the Shazam! series, which featured Captain Marvel stories. Initially, Black Adam was portrayed as the ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who was defeated by him and, having survived to modern times, challenged him and his associates. Occasionally appeared as an enemy of Superman. In the early 2000s, writers Geoff Johns, David Goyer, and Jerry Odway rewrote Black Adam as an anti-hero trying to clear his name.
