Bitcoin Ingot: Plastic Bitcoin Wallet
thingiverse
Create a durable paperless Bitcoin cold storage with this DIY project. Simply scan the public address on top to receive Bitcoin transactions, then flip the wallet open to reveal the hidden private key for spending. Before relying on it though, make sure to test your transactions first! Use at your own risk; the author takes no responsibility for any issues that may arise. To create this unique cold storage solution, you'll need OpenSCAD software, a two-color printer, and qrcode and qr2scad Python libraries. You'll also require a Bitcoin wallet address and private key in text form. Follow these steps to generate and print the STL files: 1. Install the necessary libraries using `sudo easy_install qrcode` and `sudo easy_install qr2scad`. 2. Obtain your Bitcoin wallet's address and private key, either from a MultiBit wallet or an exported file. 3. In the directory containing all files for this project, execute `./qr_models.py -k -a` to generate scad files for QR codes. 4. Open 'btc_wallet_public.scad' in OpenSCAD and compile/render it before exporting as an STL file. This includes the address QR code scad file generated by qr_models.py. 5. Print the STL using white for the bottom portion and black for layers displaying the QR code, preferably with ABS filament. 6. Repeat steps 4-5 for 'btc_wallet_private.scad'. 7. Assemble the wallet by snapping the address plaque onto the private key plaque's male joint and female groove. 8. Discard the private export, key.scad, and the private key plaque STL. 9. To use the wallet, scan the public address using a Bitcoin wallet software or with an Android phone and Mycelium app via the private key. If you don't have an Android device, import the private key into a software wallet or transfer the entire balance to another wallet or account. Be aware that most wallets do not support partial spending from cold storage; only Mycelium does. 10. For more information about Bitcoin, visit bitcoin.org.
