Chess piece A "peça de xadrez" and a "chess piece" refer to the same object. In a game of chess, these pieces are moved on a checkered board according to specific rules and each one has its own unique movement pattern. There are 16 pieces in total, with each player having 8 different types. These include the king, queen, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns. The goal of the game is to either put the opponent's king in "cheque mate" or force them into a position where they have no legal moves left.
