Pearly white on dark rosewood or rich ebony. I crafted it in black plastic-like material on a smooth maple wood surface, then re-varnished the handle - the birds are drawn to "cover" the original dowry (e.g. on a copy of a Stratocaster guitar shown in the photo). No particular challenge, but a small mistake on my part (bad copy-paste) will require trimming or cutting 2-3mm from the tail of the bird on the 12th square - the plastic pliers do this job well! To assist: the corresponding fret numbers are engraved on the back of the birds. Enjoy your little musical instrument makers.
