<p>Head and beaks of 6 birds.</p><ul><li>Gros-bec casse-noyau - Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)</li><li>Courlis cendré - Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata)</li><li>Guêpier d'Europe - European bee-eater (Merops apiaster)</li><li>Buse variable - Common buzzard (buteo buteo)</li><li>Martin pêcheur d'Europe - Common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)</li><li>Colibri d'Anna - Anna's humming bird (Calypte anna)</li></ul><p>These models were used to show how birds evolved different shapes of beaks, each adapted to a specific feeding habit.</p><p>The short, wide and robust beak of the Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) helps him crack open fruit pits and other seeds.</p><p>The long beak of the eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) helps him probe mud in shallow water to find worms, insects, molluscs, and other invertebrates.</p><p>The european bee-eater (Merops apiaster) has a typical insect feeding beak. They catch their prey in flight.</p><p>The Common buzzard (buteo buteo) has a powerfull curved beak typical of birds of prey. They feed on a large range of small vertebrates.</p><p>The sharp and hydrodynamic beak of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) helps him hunt fishes, diving on them from above.</p><p>The Anna's humming bird (Calypte anna) has a specialized beak to feed on flower nectar.</p><p> </p><p>These heads and beaks were modeled in Blender using reference images found online (side and front view)</p><p> </p><p>How to cite:<br>Romain Dewaele, Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de Genève</p>
