The first aircraft ever built, the Wright Flyer, featured a biplane design, as did nearly all airplanes in the early years of flight. Although a biplane wing structure offers several structural benefits over a monoplane, it generates more drag than a comparable unbraced or cantilever monoplane wing. Advances in materials and techniques, along with the pursuit of increased speed, made the biplane configuration obsolete for most applications by the late 1930s.
