Bioshock-Inspired Nexus 5X Case

thingiverse

This is a remix of my Nexus 5X case (check it out: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2424774), adding a Bioshock-inspired logo to the back. The logo itself I don't recall seeing in the game, so I suspect its a fan-made creation, but its all over the web, making it hard to determine its origin. This remix is an extremely challenging print to get done. As designed, the case won't fit perfectly over a phone if printed with PLA. Its possible you might be able to get it to fit if you snip off the upper edges above the volume and power buttons, but who knows? I haven't tried. To print this remix properly, as designed, you need a dual-material printer that can handle flex filament. That's not super common because most multi-material printers are Bowden-based and struggle with flex. There are three parts to this remix - the case, an opening for the logo, and the black and white (or whatever colors you choose) parts of the logo. Load all three into your slicer as a single multi-material object, and you should be able to adjust the extruder and settings for each one. For the printed version in the photo, I used Slic3r Prusa Edition. The logo was printed in black and white TPU filament with normal settings. The case was printed using the black extruder, with the infill set to print with the white extruder. The case was printed with two top layers and zero bottom layers, with a 30% hex infill. The result is the bottom having the hex pattern in white, and the sides being black, even though its a single part. You could of course print it however you wanted. The bridging over the openings for the USB port and the buttons is particularly difficult for printers to bridge in flex. If your printer can't handle it, you can just snip off the mess after - there's enough rigidity in the upper lip to hold the case securely just with the other edges. (Which is part of why its likely you won't be able to get it on with a PLA print.) And if you're thinking "hey, that marble effect is really cool" - its just a bit of luck. The black was oozing a bit when laying down the first couple layers, and the strings got embedded in the white like that.
