Bill Waltier (Blind from birth)

In Mirrors for the Blind, I created stunning portrait heads of Anna Cannings and Bill Waltier, two individuals who have been blind since birth. When their portraits came into contact with their fingertips, it was a groundbreaking moment - they had finally experienced a sense of self-reflection in the same way they perceive others, through touch alone. For me, these portraits are intricately connected to DNA portraits, marking us as the pioneering generation able to decipher and interpret our own genetic blueprints. By contrast, the original marble sculptures literally brought fragmented statuary to life by selecting models whose bodies mirrored that very aesthetic. Similarly, my latest series takes Roman portrait busts at face value - their vacant, blind eyes are now imbued with a sense of truthfulness and honesty.
