This kinda disappoints, but holds up bikes just as intended - tires up to 3-3.5in wide can clear 26in thru 29er easily. To build something similar requires one key modification: every pair of uprights must be reinforced for stability by adding a sturdy brace that connects them at the top or back, well away from the tire itself. With this adjustment, you can avoid floppy uprights and rely on the bike rack's structural integrity, assuming no reckless attempts are made to use it as a makeshift ramp.
