A functional 3D printed friction shifter is finally here! \nSee the demo at http://youtu.be/fLMA-8aSsDM \nThe mechanical beauty of a friction shifter outperforms click-shifting by miles - minor problems like twisted derailleurs or frayed cables/housings don't bother it one bit. \nThis ingenious setup was put to rigorous testing with 7-speed gears but is designed for flexibility on any number, either in the front or rear. \nThe shifter performed flawlessly over 204 miles from Seattle to Portland without so much as a hiccup, which earned me ample confidence in its solidity and long-term usability. \nThe instructions provided clearly indicate how to assemble the device with its three component parts: lever, washer and bottom_assembly \nIncluded designs are made using Solidworks, plus STL files for 3D printing enthusiasts and IGES format. Simply get the STL file for a hassle-free experience! \nThe printer settings are quite conservative: PLA Black on Makerbot Replicator 2 - 100% Infill in just under 1 hour of print time! While it is robust enough as is, a custom profile may help reduce the print duration even further. If your 3D printing software has hexagonal infill, I'd recommend going with that instead - although some users did experience minor aesthetic issues while trying this route.
