Experience a functioning 3D-printed friction shifter in action by viewing this video: http://youtu.be/fLMA-8aSsDM. Friction shifters, although not clicking into gear like index shifters, possess advantages such as tolerance for minor issues like slightly bent derailers or worn cables/housings. Tested with a 7-speed setup, this shifter should be compatible with any number of speeds (front or rear derailer). The creator biked from Seattle to Portland (204 miles) using this shifter without encountering any problems and has logged over 300 miles on the same print, ensuring durability. The friction shifter consists of three parts: bottom_assembly, lever, and washer. Solidworks design files and IGES format are provided; if printing, obtain the STL files instead. Printed with a Makerbot Replicator 2 using black PLA, settings include 2 shells and 100% infill, taking approximately 1.5 hours to print. The settings can be adjusted for less infill but adding extra shells may enhance stability. For a fully solid print, use Makerware 2.2 or later and create a custom profile with linear infill style. However, note that this setting might cause cosmetic print issues, so the default hexagonal fill is recommended. Non-printed components include two #10 nylon lock nuts, two #10 x 1" machine screws, three #8 washers, splicing tape (or thin piece of rubber) for mounting (standard electrical tape does not work), and optional bike lube between the washers. Assembly and installation should be straightforward. Ensure that the screw fits without binding in both the lever and base piece, and do not over-tighten the handlebar mounting bolt to prevent cracking. Anticipate making a few friction adjustments during the first mile or two, followed by less frequent adjustments after mile 50.
