Bigscreen Beyond Added Facial Support
thingiverse
WHYThe Bigscreen Beyond is a tiny technical marvel. While it's small size, weight, and custom facial gasket should, in theory, make it one of the most comfortable VR headsets, in practice, I've found that is not necessarily always the case. Because the headset is so small, the support gasket places all of the support on your lower orbital bones, and upper brow ridge, as well as along the bridge of your nose. Even though my custom gasket seems to fit the contours of my face quite well, in actual game play, I still find the Beyond to be less comfortable than some other larger VR headsets I've used.WHATImmediately above where the top of the Beyond gasket sits on your face is your forehead, and immediately below where it sits on your face are your cheekbones...both of these areas are fairly flat surfaces that are actually quite optimal for distributed support. This thing attempts to take advantage of that fact by extending the support pads onto the forehead and check bones.HOWIt is possible to use this adapter both with the custom face gasket installed or standalone without the custom face gasket. If used with the Beyond face gasket, you get the advantage of full light blockage, but there is very little pressure from the beyond gasket itself, as most of the support is on the forehead and cheeks. If used without the custom gasket, the eye cavity is more breathable similar to most other VR headsets, but there is also some light leakage around the edges. I personally recommend using this with the stock gasket also installed. Both with and without the Beyond gasket installed, I had no issue dialing in the sweet spot as well as I can without this face plate. Comfort-wise, I find it's a pretty significant improvement over the stock gasket alone...though I still would not say this is necessarily the most comfortable VR headset I've used. Also, you do lose a bit of the tiny look and feel of the standalone Beyond, but I personally find it's worth the trade-off for the added comfort. As this was actually remixed from a Quest 2 facial interface, most 3rd party Quest 2 pads, such as the VR Cover pad will probably work fine. That said, I'm using it with an HTV Vive face cushion, which I find to fits perfectly. I've even included a centering hole for use with the Vive face cushion. Here's the face cushion I'm using:HTC Vive Face CushionNote that the stock video cable has a very long connector stock, which will be partially under the face pad if plugged directly into the primary USB-C port. As such, you may also want to use a short 10GB USB-C extension cable with a shorter connector in order to bring the video and audio ports out. I've been using this extender and haven't had any issues.UPDATE: I still find the extender above to be a bit stiff. I've ordered a couple of these flat USB-C extenders to see if they work better. I will add an update when they arrive and I have tested with them. NOTE: In spite of the specs, THESE DID NOT WORK WITH THE BEYOND.Be default, the facial interface is designed to work with the stock Beyond soft strap. I've included a strap loop at the top so that you have the option of using the Beyond top strap from front to back rather than side to side. This is how I prefer to use the strap.I have also included a slightly modified version of Beyond DAS strap adapters. My version is slightly thinner and mount at less of an angle than the original, as the extra angle that the default DAS adapter provides isn't needed when the DAS is used with this face plate. Also note that if you use this with a DAS strap, it's very tight fit on the top loop. You may have to use a small file to open up the opening on the sides just a smidge to get the DAS top strap threaded through.
