Big Novelty Bolt

Big Novelty Bolt

This model is a giant novelty bolt created to assist novice users in understanding key features of their CAD tools. I built this model using the CATIA software program. The following section provides a clear, step-by-step explanation on how to create a basic piece in any 3D design program, which will be useful for students who are new to this type of work. Step 1: Shaft Create a cylindrical shaft with a conical head by simply adding some geometry. Step 2: Screw Drive Subtract material from the larger part of the cone where the screw drive will go in your desired pattern. For mine, I used a simple Phillips head design. Step 3: Chamfer Add an angled edge to the end of the bolt. This is the first part of this piece and sets up what comes next. Step 4: Thread Subtract material from the shaft following a spiral path that results in thread. Make it more interesting by making each new layer slightly larger, creating a tapering effect towards the top of the bolt. Project: Create A Design For A Product You Can Print Every Day Objectives: Practice basic features of the given 3D design software. Learn how to break down complex tasks into easier-to-handle steps. Redesign everyday products for printing using a computer's three-dimensional tool. Target Audience People of all ages can work on this project, even if they have no experience in three-dimensional modeling yet. Novice designers should be interested because it gives them hands-on practice working with real objects. Preparation: Students will need to access a computer and the program that is designed for creating 3D images, as well as any basic features necessary within it. Each student must understand how to operate their chosen design tool without too much instruction first. Step 1: Pick A Daily Object Choose an object that people commonly see daily. Step 2: Change It Up! Change the chosen mundane item in such a way so it can be viewed from many angles and stand out, which is more interesting than its normal form. Step 3: Review Your Work Review any new work done to make improvements if they are needed and optimize designs to meet printer's guidelines for better print efficiency and appearance. Results: After this exercise has been completed, you will be able to present the following things. Concept sketches that have detailed changes made on everyday models Variations after review with several alternate versions created based on student opinions The actual three-dimensional object, printed from the students very own design!
