Big Ben is the iconic nickname for the majestic Great Bell that chimes away at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, a landmark that has become synonymous with the city of London. The term Big Ben often extends to refer to the clock and its magnificent clock tower, a structure that towers above the rest. Officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, this architectural marvel was renamed in 2012 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to its rename, it was simply known as the Clock Tower. The tower is home to the world's largest four-faced chiming clock and stands tall as the third-highest free-standing clock tower globally. Completed in 1858, the tower celebrated a milestone 150th anniversary on May 31st, 2009, with grand festivities taking place. Today, it remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the United Kingdom, frequently featured in establishing shots of films set against the backdrop of London's vibrant streets.
