Bicycle 1 1/8" Headset Starnut Installation Tool
thingiverse
While helping a friend with a bike, I needed a handy tool to install a threadless headset starnut. I didn't have time to make it to a local shop and I really didn't want to buy one so I quickly whipped up this to print out. This tool works perfectly for a 1 1/8 threadless headset. Simply use the bolt that came with the headset to hold the starnut in place, then slip this tool over the steerer tube to keep things properly aligned while driving it in. I used a hammer and held the fork firmly in place to prevent damaging the dropouts or the floor. It also served as a torture test for what kind of hammering extruded ABS can take. Turns out, it's quite capable as I was able to get the starnut started accurately with it. The original design didn't have enough clearance where the starnut is mounted for it to flex enough to fit down all the way inside the steerer tube, but the version shared here should work just fine. Print Settings Printer Brand: Printer: Rostock MAX Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: .2mm layer with .5 nozzle Infill: 50% Notes: This was printed with Microcenter Inland black ABS at 240 degrees and 100 degree bed temps. I used 50% infill with 3 shell walls. The top part of the tool (printed at the bottom) was 10 layers and the other side was 6. Other than a few very small dents in the base, there was no other visible damage to the tool after hammering on it with a standard hammer.
