Submission Specifications: Maximum Diameter: 449.9 mm Optimal Scoop Engagement Width: 175 mm Total Volume Capacity: 1683.37 cm^3 Primary Material Selection: Aluminum 1060 Alloy Theoretical Fill Limit: 32.98 Liters Fill Ratio: 75% Length Measurement: 360 mm Mass Calculation: 4455.68 grams Design Description: Our innovative design incorporates a distinctive bidirectional spiral to collect and store regolith. The main body of the drum will be crafted from Aluminum 1060 alloy, chosen for its impressive durability, light weight, and thermal resistance properties. Our inspiration stems from the remarkable structure of snail shells and their unique helical shape. As the drum rotates, regolith is naturally drawn towards the center of the spiral through gravity's force, while being expelled when rotated in the opposite direction. The spiral structure serves as a robust internal support system. Stress tests have demonstrated minimal deformation on scoops and drum at forces of 1000 newtons. To avoid compromising the integrity of the design, we deliberately opted against implementing a segmented assembly method due to regolith's intrusive nature. Future Design Enhancements: This initial design was developed under the assumption that manufacturing and assembly would occur on Earth. Future designs can incorporate a more storage-efficient structure or explore alternative material options to optimize performance.
