Beyerdynamic DT 990 - Magnetic-Microphone
thingiverse
I wanted to use my DT990 Headphones for gaming, so I needed a Microphone that wouldn't be permanently attached. I thought making a magnetic "add-on" would allow me to easily remove and install the mic. To create this add-on, I used neodymium magnets (17 x 9 x 2.5mm) I had at home and designed around them. The Cable-kink-protection seemed like a great spot since it's the right height and not fragile. I simply placed the two parts for the Headphone around the cable and they fit snugly in the top space of the kink protection, allowing for some movement. Then I added a magnet and an M3 bolt and nut to hold everything together. Initially, I thought I needed two bolts, but one was sufficient. For the microphone part, you'll need to force the magnet in tightly and use a piece of stiff wire (I used 1.8mm copper wire from an electric motor at work) to hold the weight of the lavallier clip-on Microphone. On the back end, I bent the wire into a hook shape to resist torsion and keep it in place; the small screw is optional since the wire has enough tension to stay put. The front part was simply bent to hold the mic as I liked it. To prevent the microphone from rotating, I held it in position with some edges and the magnet kept everything together nicely. This design worked out well for me, allowing me to use my good headphones for chatting while easily adding the mic. Even with fast head movements or sneezing, the microphone doesn't move at all (although this may vary depending on your magnets). Overall, I see this as an inspiration rather than a "print and it works" solution since my printer isn't very precise, so the lengths and other details may not be accurate. If you encounter any issues, please let me know specifically what didn't work for you and I may make some adjustments.
