Bewick Woodblock Carving
sketchfab
A scan of an exquisite woodblock carving from Thomas Bewick's pioneering workshop comes into view. The intricate design was brought to life by an anonymous craftsman working within his shop walls. To recreate this masterpiece, photogrammetry processed with Agisoft Photoscan and structured light scanning from an HP 3D Scan Pro S3 were combined in perfect harmony. Geomagic Design X seamlessly integrated the scans, while Photoscan added a rich texture that brings the carving to life. Prints from this original block would have resembled the ones shown below: These high-resolution scans are part of a captivating series of Victorian woodblocks meticulously studied by Dr. Michael Hancher, an esteemed member of the UMN English department. The blocks are carefully preserved within the Special Collections and Rare Books unit of the University of Minnesota Libraries. Thanks to AISOS, a cutting-edge facility located in LATIS Labs within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, these scans were made possible.
