Agustín de Betancourt y Molina was a highly respected Spanish engineer born in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, who made significant contributions to various fields across Spain, France, and Russia. His impressive work spanned from pioneering steam engines and designing balloons to developing innovative structural engineering solutions and shaping urban planning strategies. As an accomplished educator, Betancourt established and directed the esteemed Spanish Corps of Engineers and the prestigious Saint Petersburg Institute of Communications Engineers. With his expertise in urban planning and construction management, Betancourt oversaw planning and development projects in prominent Russian cities like Saint Petersburg, Kronstadt, Nizhny Novgorod, and others. In 1797, Betancourt's outstanding achievements earned him key positions as Chief Inspector of Ports and Communications in Spain, Chief of the Corps of Engineers of the Spanish military, and other influential roles. By 1802, he founded Spain's first engineering college, the School of the Corps of Engineers, which he successfully managed until 1807.
