This little statue stands here at the OBS Bonnen in Gieten, in memory of Sara Meijer, the only Jewish student of the Bonnerschool in Gieten and all other victims of World War II. Sara Meijer was picked up with her family on the night of October 2-3, 1943, and taken to Westerbork. Two days later she was sent to the extermination camp Auschwitz. The 16-year-old Sarah was immediately brought to the gas chamber upon arrival. Mayor Munniksam praised the initiative of the Friends of Bonnerschool Foundation and expressed hope that this statue will stand as a symbol for a united and humane society. On the pedestal of the statue is a plaque with a poem by Gerard Nijenhuis.
