Basque author Bernardo Atxaga, born July 27, 1951 as Joseba Irazu Garmendia, writes in various genres including short stories, novels, poetry, and essays, all penned and published predominantly in Euskera. His works have been translated into numerous languages, making him the most read and translated Basque author. Atxaga earned degrees in Economics and Philosophy & Literature from universities in Bilbao and Barcelona respectively. A full member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language since 2006, he was also appointed to Jakiunde, the Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters, in November 2010. Atxaga resides in Zalduendo, a town in Álava.
