Bernard Palissy at the Petit Palais, Paris, France
myminifactory
This artwork portrays Bernard Palissy, a renowned French Huguenot craftsman, housed in the Petit Palais museum in Paris. As a master potter, hydraulics engineer and skilled artisan, he gained fame for his sixteen-year-long struggle to replicate Chinese porcelain. In the 19th century, Palissy's ceramics inspired Mintons Ltd's Victorian majolica, showcased at the Great Exhibition of 1851 under the name "Palissy ware". Palissy made significant contributions to natural sciences and is famous for discovering principles in geology, hydrology and fossil formation. A devout Protestant, he was imprisoned for his faith during France's tumultuous Wars of Religion and sentenced to death. He ultimately perished from poor treatment in the Bastille in 1590.
