The berimbau (/bərɪmˈbaʊ/) is a single-string percussion instrument that originates from Brazil. This musical bow has its roots in Africa, where it's known by various names. The berimbau plays a vital role in the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira, serving as the leader of the movements within the roda - the faster the berimbau is played, the quicker the capoeirista responds. This instrument has also been featured in a popular song by Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell, with lyrics penned by Vinicius de Moraes. The berimbau is deeply rooted in Candomblé-de-caboclo tradition. To assemble the instrument, you'll need to thread a thin piece of wire through a small amount of string, using dental floss as an alternative if needed.
