The Benz "Velo", originally known as Velociped, was a rear-engined car with a single horizontal cylinder and upright flywheel. Its bore and stroke measured 110 x 110 mm, resulting in a total displacement of 1045 cc or 63.8 cubic inches. The maximum power output occurred at 450 rpm. A large 18-liter fuel tank sat under the driver's seat, paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Karl Benz sold over 1200 Velo cars between 1894 and 1902 for 2000 gold marks each, a significant price point for those days. The Velo marked a milestone as the world's first car produced on a large scale and also the first small car. Its top speed reached an impressive 20 km/h. The car featured a sturdy wooden frame reinforced with iron and had compact dimensions at just 2.25 meters long. The initial 1894 model weighed only 280 kilograms, thanks to its lightweight design. The wheelbase measured 1340 millimeters in length, while the front track width was 1000 millimeters and the rear track width was 1040 millimeters. Several variations of the basic design were produced, with some models featuring solid spokes like the one shown in the model. However, most Velo cars came equipped with wire-spoke wheels and solid rubber tires. The front wheels measured 550 millimeters in diameter, while the back wheels reached a diameter of 850 millimeters. A distinctive step between the mudguards was more commonly seen on the Velo's successor, the 'Comfortable', but I did notice some examples of this feature on the Velo itself. As there were no reliable blueprints available, I had to rely on photos for my model's accuracy.
