Houdon's iconic bust of Franklin pioneered a series of canonical portraits depicting American history's most influential figures, including Washington, Jefferson, John Paul Jones, the Marquis de Lafayette and Robert Fulton (1989.329). This marble masterpiece captures Franklin's charismatic personality, which captivated French society during his nine-year tenure in Paris (1776–85), representing the newly independent United States with flair. His natural hair, simple Quaker attire, and witty demeanor starkly contrasted with the conventions of diplomatic circles he frequented. Franklin's celebrity status drew fashionable hostesses and crowds alike, with his image widely disseminated by leading artists of the time. Houdon himself produced numerous renditions of Franklin's portrait in various formats and media. This elegantly modernized version, set against a backdrop of contemporary dress, was unmistakably favored by American statesmen of the era, foreshadowing George Washington's insistence that Houdon's statue of him (1792; State Capitol Building, Richmond) showcase the American president in modern attire rather than pseudo-antique garb. Historians continue to debate whether Franklin actually posed for Houdon or if the sculptor skillfully captured his likeness from mere acquaintance. With ample opportunities to observe the American minister at the Masonic lodge of the Nine Sisters, where they and many other artists and patrons resided (e.g., Count Stroganov; see Voltaire and Diderot), it is likely that Houdon had sufficient insight to create a vividly accurate portrait.
