The supersonic Bell X-1 rocket plane blasted into existence as a collaborative endeavor between the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Air Force to propel breakthroughs in aerospace technology through research at the hands of Bell Aircraft Company's skilled engineers and technicians. In 1944, a vision for the XS-1 began taking shape; over the next year, 1945, design blueprints were meticulously crafted by innovative minds to bring the supersonic aircraft to life. After four long years of tireless effort, on January 8th, 1948, the X-1 finally broke the sound barrier at an incredible 972 miles per hour, defying all odds as it tore through the atmosphere, setting a world record that would stand the test of time for generations to come.
