NASA's NACA conducted the first successful rocket test in 1947, launching their first rocket X-1 on a high-altitude flight. The Bell Corporation's rocket engine played a significant role in this achievement, and the X-1 aircraft was launched four times from a modified B-50 bomber. This success highlighted the need for more advanced propulsion systems. The experimental aircraft featured a stripped-down cockpit and removed nonessential components like navigation, communication systems, instruments, and passenger seats to focus on rocket test performance. It also had a simplified structure with no wings or tail surfaces, making it lighter and easier to manage during the experiment.
