Some were modified with mounted machine guns, rockets, and other weapons for gunship support until the introduction of the Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship. Over 17,000 were built for the US military during the 1960s, with the UH-1B being an early version. The Huey could accommodate up to ten troops or six wounded soldiers.
