The Bell UH-1B Iroquois, commonly known as "Huey," is a versatile utility and medivac helicopter powered by a single turbine engine. Developed for the US Army in the mid-1950s, it entered production in 1960 and served during the Vietnam War. Equipped with 50 caliber machine guns, 2.75 inch rockets, or other weapons, some Huey gunships supported troop transports and medivac helicopters until the introduction of the Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship. Over 17,000 were built for the US military in the 1960s, with numerous improved versions developed from the initial UH-1B model; some are still in use and production today. The Huey could carry up to ten troops or transport five to six wounded soldiers.
