The Bell UH-1B Iroquois, also known as the "Huey," is a single-engine turbine-powered utility and medevac helicopter that was first built in the mid-1950s for the US Army. Produced from 1960, it served during the Vietnam War and beyond, with its versatile role including delivering troops and medivacing wounded soldiers under fire. Some Hueys were modified as gunships, equipped with mounted 50 caliber machine guns, 2.75-inch rockets, and other weapons to support transport and medevac missions until the introduction of the Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship. Over 16,000 Hueys were built for military use in the US during the 1960s, with the UH-1B being one of its first versions. The helicopter could carry up to ten troops or five to six wounded soldiers and had many improved versions produced over time, some still in use today.
