Bell Siphons are commonly employed in aquaponics and fish tanks to automatically drain tanks once the water level reaches a specific threshold. Relying solely on natural forces, the tank drains relatively quickly. Notably, the Bell Siphon features no moving parts. By connecting probes to the outlet of the bell siphon and a microcontroller or Raspberry PI, you can create a solid state rain gauge. Instructions for building the device are available at https://www.instructables.com/id/Bell-Siphon-Rain-Gauge/. The article includes python code and other necessary information.
