Bell of the Cansignorio della Scala Artist: Maestro Jacopo (1366-1385) Date: 1370 Medium: Bronze Dimensions: Accession #: 379.00 Credit: From the Torre del Gardello, Verona This bell was likely created in the twelfth century, but around 1379 the Scaligeri renovated the tower of a typical medieval fortress-house, making it the first clock tower with a bell in Verona. After restoring the clock tower, Maestro Jacobo skillfully installed this bell as his impressive work. He was a renowned bronze smelter at that time. The relief of the Scala family coat of arms is engraved on the bell along with an image of a fisherman from San Zeno and inscriptions in Gothic characters. Today, the bell is kept securely in Castelvecchio. This object is part of "Scan The World".
