Initially developed as a light observation helicopter for the US Army but not selected, it was redesigned for commercial use and later adopted by the army as OH-58 Kiowa. The first Bell 206 flight occurred in 1966, with Ross Perot and Jay Cobern completing a record-breaking round-the-world trip in a Bell 206 named Spirit of Texas within 29 days and 3 hours - the first such feat by helicopter.
