When entering the Forbidden City in Beijing from the Meridian Gate, a large square comes into view, crossed by five bridges over the meandering Inner Golden Water River. At the back of this square stands the impressive Gate of Supreme Harmony. The Hall of Supreme Harmony Square serves as its backdrop. On top of three white marble tiers rises an enormous three-tiered structure. Situated to the south of the complex are three important buildings, beginning with the imposing Hall of Supreme Harmony. Above the ground level, which surrounds it at approximately 30 meters or 98 feet, stands the massive wooden palace. This impressive construction serves as the imperial center for ceremonies and represents one of the most enduring wood structures still standing today in China.
