Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 17, 1770, in Bonn, Germany. He is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in the transition from Classical to Romantic music in Western art music. As one of the most renowned and influential composers in history, his works continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Beethoven's compositions are characterized by their complexity and innovation. His repertoire includes nine symphonies, five piano concertos, one violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. He also created chamber music, choral pieces, and songs that showcase his mastery of various musical styles. Born into a musical family in Bonn, Beethoven demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age. His father, Johann van Beethoven, and Christian Gottlob Neefe taught him the art of music. As he grew older, Beethoven sought to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart but instead befriended Joseph Haydn. In 1792, he moved to Vienna, where he began studying with Haydn and quickly established himself as a virtuosic pianist. Beethoven spent most of his life in Vienna, producing some of his most iconic works despite suffering from hearing loss that worsened over the years. By the last decade of his life, he was almost completely deaf. Despite this challenge, Beethoven continued to compose music that would be celebrated for generations to come.
