Bronze statue of sitting bear unveiled in 2001, part of Semi-automatic Comfort Machine, represents tragic history of bears in Maastricht, Netherlands. Artist Michel Huisman's masterpiece is situated in Aldenhofpark, former location of infamous bear pit. Now officially a part of Maastricht City Park, Beer Jo or English-speaking Jo the Bear commemorates last bear to inhabit city and serves as scathing critique of bears' deplorable living conditions. This project was spearheaded by Augustin Lambert and Brissa Kim under University College Maastricht program.
