Beer crate holder for VanMoof S3 bike rack V2
prusaprinters

Here in the Netherlands people transport all sorts of stuff on their bikes. Including their beer. Usually this is done by setting the crate on the rear bike rack and holding it with one hand. I designed a way to do it hands free.

As the 24 bottle crates of most Dutch beer brands adhere to the same standard it was possible to design a holder that will suit most of the main brands. I've tried both a Hertog Jan and Heineken crate and despite small differences in tolerance they both fit.

My idea is not new. There already is a product on the market called Kratvast but that product only seems to fit a certain kind of (standard?) bike rack. My specific design is meant for the bike rack of a VanMoof S3.

V2

A few volunteers have tested V1. In one case the crate holder failed after extensive use. I blame the design and the amount of material used to be the cause. With V2 I hope to solve the structural issues. Two additional diagonal beams and thicker main beams make for a much stiffer frame. Extra infill and a thicker perimeter add to that.

Print Settings

PETG
0.2 Layer height
4 perimeters (strong is gud!)
15% Gyroid infill (good tensile strength in all directions)

Assembly

Print both halves and 4 dowels. The dowels are not necessary but will help with lining up the two parts when gluing them together. I used ordinary (CA) superglue. After gluing put some rubber bands or clamps around the assembly and let it dry thoroughly. The glue I used tended to stain the PETG as it oozed out the sides so take care if you don't want to post process it after gluing. Sanding does clean it up quite a bit.

Warning: Some beta testers have noticed that some brands have started using crates with different geometries. The general shape is the same but there some have cross sections built in that prevents the crate holder from slotting in the middle. I strongly suggest checking the crates in your local supermarket before starting to print.
