Honey bees normally opt out of nesting in occupied buildings, but when they decide to move in, they usually set up their home in the eaves or soffits of a house that faces east or southeast. Bees only need about 1/8 of an inch to get into a space and will fill it until there's no more room available. Once all the spaces are filled, bees might move on to the roofline. It seems that honey bees aren't causing any damage to the building at first glance, but they can leave behind a sweet, sticky mess that attracts other insects and even seeps through ceilings or walls. If the nest is located in the roof area, repairs could be particularly pricey. Bees also have a tendency to nest behind bricks, especially where there's no grout applied for ventilation purposes, as well as between aluminum or wooden siding and drywall. You can find bee hives inside 4-inch-by-4-inch spaces in cinder blocks and concrete, and even underneath the floor of a shed used for your lawnmower or pool supplies.
