Bedside Phone Shelf
thingiverse
My roommate and I got bunk beds recently to make our dorm room feel less cramped. We've found it to be a great idea so far, but there is one problem I'm facing on the top bunk. Since I need my phone nearby in case someone needs to wake me up at night and don't want it sitting next to me because I'm 10 feet off the ground, I have nowhere to put it. To solve this issue, I came up with an idea to build a shelf that attaches to the side of the bed frame. The design is tailored for my iPhone 6 with an Otterbox, but I think it should fit most phones without any problem. So far, I've only printed the original model and not Phone Shelf 2, as it came to me after completing the first version. Upon finishing the initial print, I realized having a small indentation to make removing my phone and charger easier would be helpful, but I don't think this is essential, so I won't make an entirely new shelf for now. However, there seems no reason why these adjustments couldn't work when printing as long as the indentation remains at the top. The hook for attaching it to the bed frame was based on our dorm room beds and will probably vary depending on different types of beds, so I uploaded .step files for everyone to modify them as they need to. There's also a plan to upload another version where this can be attached to a wall later on. For those planning to print the original model, you might find the instructions useful - PLA with 12% infill and three layers at 2.5 resolution worked well in my case and is recommended for stability reasons. With Simplify 3D now being used to place supports manually, I decided to put a couple of them near the phone as the gap looked too big to bridge. Lastly, when printing or handling this item, be aware that it might scratch due to sharp corners - at least my arm experienced a few scratches because of it. It's nothing serious but worth noting.
