Beauty and the Beast is a traditional fairy tale penned by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and first released in 1740 as part of La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins. The original, lengthy version was abridged, rewritten, and published by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in her popular children's magazine Magasin des enfants in 1756, followed later by Andrew Lang in his highly-acclaimed Blue Fairy Book series of fairy tales in 1889, resulting in the most commonly retold versions. Influences include Cupid and Psyche, written by renowned Roman author Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis over two thousand years ago in The Golden Ass, as well as the classic Italian fairytale The Pig King, composed by Giovanni Francesco Straparola and featured prominently in his captivating series of tales known as The Facetious Nights of Straparola. Variations on this timeless tale have captured European hearts, including the beloved French opera Zémire and Azor written by celebrated dramatist Marmontel with enchanting melodies from master composer Grétry in 1771; its enduring popularity stretched well into the 19th century.
