Getting Obsessed with Creating Bearingless Fidget Spinners - A Safer Alternative As a parent, I've become increasingly concerned about the safety of traditional fidget spinners, especially around young children and individuals with special needs. The risk of choking hazards is very real, as evidenced by recent news stories of people swallowing bearings. That's why I'm working on converting my Golden Snitch fidget spinner to be bearingless. This design modification makes it safer for everyone involved. While I've made progress in creating a bearingless version, there are still some limitations to this design. The wings could use some refinement to make them look more aerodynamic, and the ball part of the Snitch would need to be printed separately and glued on to achieve a full circle motion. If anyone with advanced 3D design skills is willing to take on this challenge, I'd love to see a revised version that incorporates these features. One key constraint when printing bearingless spinners is that they must be printed without supports. This internal gap is essential for the spinner's functionality, but it can make it difficult to achieve a smooth, curved surface. If someone could find a way to create caps or extensions that maintain the curve of the ball and enhance the wings' design, I'd be thrilled. The photo of the two-tone version was printed using gold filament, with silver nail polish applied to the wings. However, I caution against painting areas that require movement, as this can compromise the spinner's performance. If you do choose to paint your bearingless spinner, make sure to use a wide enough gap between the moving parts. For those interested in printing their own version, I recommend using Tinkercad to edit and customize the design online. You can find the original file here: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/lO0eTtOjs9S As for commercial use, please note that I don't intend for these designs to be sold for profit. Instead, consider creating them as a fundraiser for non-profit organizations, such as Harry Potter Alliance groups. Let's keep the spirit of creativity and safety alive!
