Zeus, king of the sky, lightning and thunder, emerged as one of six children born from Cronus and Rhea, two of twelve titans. Born to Gaia, Earth, and Uranus, Sky, the titans were a powerful force in ancient mythology. One legend surrounding Cronus' rise to power is his overthrow of father Uranus with a sickle forged by Gaia herself. To prevent being overthrown as he had been by his own father, Cronus consumed every child born to Rhea, except Zeus. When Zeus was conceived, Rhea fled Earth and gave birth in secret. She deceived Cronus into swallowing a boulder disguised as their newborn son instead of the infant Zeus. Raised on Earth by various beings and mythical creatures, Zeus eventually joined forces with Gaia and Poseidon to concoct a plan that would render Cronus unconscious, forcing him to regurgitate his siblings: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. As time passed, the gods engaged in battle with the titans, each granted special powers by the Earth and Sky. Zeus received his iconic lightning bolt, while Poseidon wielded a trident, and Hades possessed a cap of invisibility. After emerging victorious over both the Titans and Giants, Zeus claimed his rightful place as King of the Gods on Olympus.
