To produce a commercially viable product from a desktop 3D printer using cutting-edge materials requires bold moves and swift execution, especially when working under time pressure with little experience in 3D printing and a tight four-week schedule to get to market. Igneous London made its debut on the Barbican scene by late 2013, showcasing a collection that drew inspiration from the striking similarities between current 3D printing processes and the geological formations of igneous rock. These formations are created through the layering-up of cooling magma (intrusive and extrusive) after an eruption. The challenge was clear: to craft a result that was both creative and experimental, yet simple enough in design to be printed easily and cost-effectively while commanding a premium price. By focusing on jewelry designs, we were able to tap into the full potential of the machine and unlock innovative ways to use it. Our early adoption of materials like Laybrick and Laywood not only aligned perfectly with Cinter's brand identity but also piqued our curiosity as materials scientists. This allowed us to experiment with surface finish, texture, and color in exciting new ways. The response from customers was overwhelming, as our collection sold out within a few weeks at the Barbican Centre in London.
