In America, beanies are tight-fitting caps without brims, crafted from three-sided panels of fabric stitched together at the crown by a button and sewn along the edges. Typically made from cloth or felt, some beanies may also be fashioned from leather or silk. In certain U.S. areas and parts of Canada, "beanie" is used to describe a knitted cap, often woolen, which is also known as a "stocking cap" or "toque."
