A beam engine, which emerged around 1705, features a pivoted overhead beam that transmits force from a vertical piston to a connected rod. Initially created by Thomas Newcomen for draining mines in Cornwall, these engines were later enhanced by engineers like James Watt, Jonathan Hornblower and Arthur Woolf, and William McNaught (Glasgow). They could be utilized not only for pumping water out of mines or into canals, but also to boost water supply for mills' waterwheels.
