Beam Compass - Yard Stick
thingiverse
My wife is an artist who loves to draw large circles on canvas. To help her with that, I created a beam compass using a $1 Lowe's Wooden Yard Stick as the beam. The stick measures 6.4 mm x 36.4 mm in cross-section and can be purchased at Lowe's under item #22079 and model #30060. To build this compass, you will need the following parts: - A Lowe's Wooden Yard Stick (6.4 mm x 36.4 mm cross-section) - One 4d 1-1/2" smooth box nail or something similar - Two 4mm nuts - Two 4mm x 20mm socket head cap screws, ideally one 16mm and one 20mm long - A 4mm washer - And a pencil To install the nail and cap screws, I heated them until they melted the PLA material, then pushed them into place. They retained their shape nicely that way. Alternatively, you could drill out the holes slightly and glue them in. If you want the yardstick measurements to indicate the radius of the circle, cut off the first inch from the stick. You can also keep the entire yardstick length and adjust the measurement accordingly. If you have a 5-gallon paint stick, consider using this design instead: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4321817
